we know that lots of folks saying michelle obama knocked it out of the park, bill clinton and obama obama were no slouches either, of course, so who other than someone named clinton or obama really impressed you? >> i think that one of the other speeches that really stuck out for me, and i know was a big hit at the convention and with folks around the country was our keynote speaker, the first latino ever for a dnc keynote speaker, julian castro. and he really, i think, impressed the crowd not just with his personal story, but with his argument about how his personal story was not just the quintessential american story, but it was a story that was possible only in this great country and that the opportunities that were available to him to make him successful are the opportunities that are at stake in this election and that it was obama's policies that he's put in place and will continue to put in place to make sure that that american dream that he is now fulfilling is going to be available to everybody, regardless of how much money you make, where you come from, what family you were born

you spoke at a meeting of the women's caucus, i think the same morning that michelle obama was speaking. what's your reaction to that line? what does that line mean to you? >> i love that line. that line was like a modern feminist statement. one of the reasons for that is that 80% of women do have children by the time we're 44 years old, but too often women have to hide the fact that we have children, we hide the pictures in our offices, we don't talk about our children in the professional world because there is significant wage and hiring discrimination against moms. so to have the first lady stand up there and say my job and one of the important parts of my jobs is mom in chief is a significant boost to the women out there who are struggling. >> did you interpret it the same way? >> yes, i did. >> did you really? >> yes. well in the sense of saying, yeah, i thought it was honest and i thought it was fundamentally for women. they wake up every day and you can go to work and you can work two jobs, you try to make ens meet but fundamentally what you want is best for your children. that's

it kind of fell flat on the heels of michelle obama's speech but, of course, david axelrod and campaign aides have done the same thing saying they didn't think they were going to get much of a bounce out of the convention anyway. on the heels of these two conventions, we are nowhere different than where we were before the convention, very even going into the debates. we'll have a very level playing field on october 3rd. >> heather: president obama was given a heads-up as to what this jobs report would be prior to his speech which is normal. he knew it was coming. he is campaigning today in florida, a state with the highest elderly population and unemployment rate of 8.8%. there is four key battleground states where the unemployment elevated above the national average. we mentioned florida, in nevada, 12%, north carolina, where they had the dnc. 9.9%. michigan, 9%. 735 delegates up for grabs among those states. how does the obama campaign win them over with job reports like friday's? >> what they are doing is running a very specific state by state campaign. so when you talk about michiga

and michelle said to him, what do you think you can contribute that no one else can contribute? and he said, there are two things i know for sure. the day i get elected, i think the world will look at us differently, and i think millions of young people across this country will look at themselves differently. >> he always said he didn't think the outcome of the race would depend on the color of his skin. he thought the meamerican peopl would make the decision on who they thought was best able to lead this country. >> obama's youth was only 45, and he thought the iraq war and, yes, his race could be in his favor. >> i start now to shake off our slum ber and fluff off our fears and make good on the debt we owe past and future generations, then i am ready to take up the cause to work with you. today, together we can finish the work that needs to be done. a new birth of freedom on this earth. at usaa, we believe honor is not exclusive to the military, and commitment is not limited to one's military oath. the same set of values that drive our nation's military are the ones we used to

obama in all sorts of ways. the trend here, closer to the current time. first ladies have a big influence on their husbands. >> host: what was mamie eisenhower's roll? >> guest: she said i went in eight years in the oval office four times. all four times i was invited. one way their marriage worked was they did not discuss nuclear weapons policy and there was a division of labor and that had quite a good marriage but did not rest on being political partners. >> host: did beth truman hate being first lady? >> guest: i think she protested too much a little bit. at the very beginning she went right back to independence and did not come back for a long time and was upsetting to her husband. she did not give press conferences. she was very private. one source of this was when harry truman was about to be named vice president in 1944 in chicago she was at first against it and the reason was her father had died -- committed suicide which no one knew and she was worried that she ran for vice president there would be the
